Senator Ali Ndume is a Nigerian politician who is the chief whip of the 10th Senate in the National Assembly. He is the senator representing Borno South senatorial district of the federal republic of Nigeria and one of the representative of Nigeria in the ECOWAS Parliament.
Senator Ali Ndume has explained reasons the current sanction imposed on the Republic of Niger by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) should be lifted.
Recall that ECOWAS had in July 2023 imposed economic sanctions on Niger, following a military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The sanctions include a ban on travel, border closure, and a freeze on assets belonging to the government and its supporters.
He made the demand while contributing to the debate on the situation report by a member of the Parliament from Niger Republic, Hon Djibo, at the 2023, Second ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament in Abuja, Nigeria.
Ndume stressed that the sanctions are biting hard on the ordinary people of the two countries. “The sanctions are not working. They are only hurting the people of Niger. We need to find a way to resolve the political crisis in Niger, and sanctions are not the answer.” He said.
