Armed clashes broke out in Tripoli on Monday evening, coinciding with the death of Abdul Ghani al-Kikli, head of the Presidential Council’s Stability Support Apparatus, commonly known as “Ghaniwa.”
Senior security sources informed Libyan Express that al-Kikli was killed at a headquarters affiliated with the 444th Combat Brigade in the Tripoli Military Zone. No information has been disclosed about why al-Kikli was present at the location or the specific circumstances of his death.
The Interior Ministry of the Interim Government of National Unity issued a statement advising Tripoli residents to remain in their homes as a precautionary safety measure, without providing further details about the security situation.
In response to the developments, both the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the United States Embassy have issued calls for calm following reports of escalating tensions and military movements in Tripoli and western regions.
