Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Enugu State, Barr. Lloyd Ikechukwu Ekweremadu, has assured that Enugu State government is ready and committed towards hosting a successful 2026, Coal City GAMES.
Ekweremadu, who made the assurance, during a meeting of Directors and Heads of Departments in his Ministry, reiterated Gov. Mbah’s commitment towards refurbishing Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, construction of brand new Awgu Games Village and other sports facilities in the state to meet international standards.
To show how the state is gearing up for the games, he pointed out that facilities such as Enugu Sports Club, 82 Division, Squash Court, will be revamped, while International Conference Centre and various accommodation, venues will be ready by 2026.
He allayed fears that the state will not conclude the revamping and renovation of sports facilities before the end of 2026. According to him, “Enugu State will put up good performance during the festival, as most elite Enugu State athletes, all over the world have indicated interest to participate in the festival.” The Commissioner further pointed out other successes of his Ministry to include, the successful hosting of the 1st internationally accredited, Enugu City International Marathon, in May, this year, in which runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Cameroun, Uganda and other elite athletes participated, as well as held Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. Secondary Schools Games in August, this year, empowered 1020 youths and 102 youth businesses, during the International Youth Day Celebration, held on 12th, August, 2025 and participated in the just concluded 9th edition of National Youth Games, held, in Asaba , Delta State, from August 26 to 7th September 2025
