The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence and brutal attacks plaguing the Middle Belt region, especially in Plateau, Benue, and Gombe States, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of all affected communities.

In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association strongly condemned the killings and acts of terror that have left families in anguish and communities devastated. “We will not relent in our advocacy for justice, safety, and dignity for our people. The bloodshed must end,” the statement read.

CAN called on all Nigerians—irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or background—to support ongoing peace efforts and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions. The organization emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding across all sectors and faiths.

“Engagement with stakeholders, including religious, ethnic, and professional leaders, is a necessary step toward sustainable peace. Any rhetoric or action that fans the flames of division must be avoided,” the association cautioned.

Reiterating its past interventions, CAN noted that it has consistently condemned violence through public statements, conducted visits to ravaged communities in Plateau State, and provided palliative support to victims. It assured that further solidarity visits and relief efforts are in the pipeline to aid those most affected by the crisis.

The Christian body also urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it, warning against the spread of fake news that could sow further discord. “The strength of Nigeria lies in our unity. As believers, we must heed the biblical call to love our neighbours and pursue peace with all men,” the statement advised.

CAN expressed its support for inclusive dialogue involving both local and international partners, including the presence of U.S. Ambassador Richard Mills, and reaffirmed its trust in platforms like the Nigerian Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) as credible spaces for constructive conversation and conflict resolution.

“Our resolve to promote unity, peace, and coexistence across Nigeria remains unshaken,” Archbishop Okoh concluded. “Together, we can build a safer and stronger nation for all.”

God bless Nigeria.
