The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, has proposed a special African parliamentary forum for responsible natural resource management. This was made at the 8th Conference of REPAM-CDS in Abuja.
The proposed forum would monitor resource conflicts, recommend safeguards, and support community-led initiatives. Tajudeen said weak resource governance leads to violence, while transparent governance fosters prosperity and stability.
He cited Nigeria’s reforms as an example and urged African parliaments to form a special forum. “Let us unite to strengthen our committees and harness natural resources responsibly,” he said.
Tajudeen also called for a continent-wide agreement on digital sovereignty. Other speakers emphasized the need for effective oversight, transparency, and accountability in natural resource management.
The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, noted that resource competition has led to conflicts and security threats. He called for a comprehensive approach, including intelligence sharing and community engagement.
“We must come together to address the challenges we face,” Ribadu said, highlighting the importance of cooperation. The conference provided a platform for African parliamentarians to discuss critical issues and develop solutions for peace and stability.
