Millions of Nigerian football fans are excited following a statement from MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv, stating that its sports channel, SuperSport will broadcast all 52 matches at the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.
The announcement came after MultiChoice last week announced that SuperSport will not be broadcasting all 52 2023 AFCON matches to its customers because it could not secure the rights.
In a post on its X (formerly Twitter ) account on Wednesday 10th January, 2024 MultiChoice reversed its earlier statement, noting that all 52 matches of the 2023 Africa Nations will now be transmitted live through SuperSport.
Fans have been jubilating following the announcement while commending MultiChoice for bringing the 2023 AFCON live matches to millions of Nigerian homes.
The excitement had led to many reactions by the fans applauding multiChoice for what they described as Great move to allow fans experiential participation in the AFCON live matches.
According to a report on the SuperSport website, MultiChoice secured the 2023 AFCON broadcast rights through a third party since it could not buy the rights from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“MultiChoice reached a commercially viable agreement with rightsholders, New World TV (NWTV), to broadcast the 34th edition of Africa’s premier men’s football competition taking place in Ivory Coast.”
Rendani Ramovha, SuperSport CEO, said: “We are delighted to be able to showcase the best of African football live to our viewers.”
Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and StarTimes had earlier secured the broadcasting rights for all 52 AFCON matches between January 13 and February 11 in Ivory Coast.
