The influx of university admission seekers in Nigeria may soon experience relief as a new university is about to increase their chances of gaining admission.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) visitation team made a second visit to inspect the proposed New City University located in Ayetoro Town, Mowe, Ogun State, Km 50, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
After the inspection, Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the proposed university, expressed optimism to reporters. He stated that the institution is poised to begin operations as soon as the National University Commission (NUC) grants them the necessary license.
Prof. Akinfeleye said, “We are very optimistic. The team was comprehensive. They inspected everything even where we did not expect them to go. We hope we have done what we need to do; as I said earlier on, our university is going to be iconic, a university that will make a significant contribution of pedagogical purity to the quality of education in Nigeria. We are grateful to the NUC team. We are awaiting the result and we hope we will pass.”
On the question of how soon the new university would take off, the erudite professor of Mass Communication said, “As soon as yesterday. If we get our license today, you can be sure we will mobilise people to get our staff and students to hit the ground running. Of course, we can’t do without going to JAMB to give us a list of students. “
In the same vein, Professor Yemi Akinseye-George, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) and Implementation Committee of the proposed university said, “The NUC team confirmed that we have scored 70 per cent in terms of transformation, in terms of acquisition of educational materials, in terms of the development of the campus and in terms of the development of the academic brief. In every respect, they scored the university very high.
Prof. Akinseye-George added that the students will not just learn but will acquire knowledge, character and entrepreneurial capacity so that they will be better citizens of their community.
He emphasised that the most important things a student will acquire in the university are education, character and entrepreneurship, adding that any student who attends the university will be a total person.
Prof. Job Ohuma Odion of the Faculty of Law, University of Benin, a consultant and part of the implementation team also spoke of the readiness of the university to take off.
He said, “We have been in it in the last two years. It is a work in progress. The blueprint is very clear. It is going to be a new model university, to focus on modern-day training. So, we are ready. “
Mrs. Taiwo Akangbe, described as the First Lady of the institution, on her part, appreciated God for the journey so far.
