A team of pro bono lawyers from the Lawyers for Rule of Law and Human Rights has successfully secured the release of 12 protesters detained by police at the Lekki Toll Gate and other locations in Lagos.

The release came after the team met with the Commissioner of Police at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park earlier today.

They raised concerns about the arbitrary arrests of protesters, which led the CP to direct the Deputy Commissioner of Police at Panti to facilitate their release.

According to Inibehe Effiong, a prominent human rights lawyer and a key figure in the legal team, the protesters were allegedly seized by thugs at the Toll Gate and handed over to the police.

Following the intervention, the detainees were released to the lawyers.

The names of the released protesters are:

  1. Labe Benedict
  2. Nura Umar
  3. Yaro Gazama
  4. Joseph Jeremiah
  5. Osinachi Udoeze
  6. Ayodele Ajayi
  7. Godwin Moloku
  8. Adelokun Wasiu
  9. Precious Alfred
  10. Yahaya Mohammed
  11. Otika Victor
  12. Ndukwe Ogbonnaya

Effiong added that the legal team is also working to assist detained protesters in other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
