The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, demanding immediate implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement or risk a nationwide industrial action.

Speaking at a press conference held in Abuja on Friday, ASUU President, Dr. Chris Piwuna, said the union’s patience is wearing thin over the government’s continued failure to address longstanding issues plaguing Nigeria’s public universities.

Dr. Piwuna highlighted nine key concerns that remain unresolved, chief among them the stalled renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, which he said has been on hold since 2017. He also pointed to the withheld salaries of lecturers from the 2022 strike period and the lingering problems associated with the controversial Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

“These issues are not new,” Piwuna said. “They speak to the government’s persistent neglect and lack of commitment to the education sector.”

He criticised the government’s failure to release revitalisation funds and earned academic allowances, noting that previous promises—such as the planned injection of ₦150 billion into the university system and the regularisation of allowances by 2026—have yet to be honoured.

Our source learned that Piwuna raised serious concerns over ‘marginalisation and victimisation’ of union members in certain state-owned universities, especially in Kogi State University and Lagos State University.
