The Minister made the appeal during a scheduled meeting with some members of the Governing Council of the University led by the Pro chancellor and Chairman, Ambassador Greg O. Mbadiwe.

The Minister stressed the need for the Council to close ranks with both Academic Staff Union of Univeristies (ASUU) and MDCAN in the interest of the university.

According to the Minister, the advice became necessary to ensure stability in the university, emphasizing that with peace, the University will develop rapidly.

It will be recalled that the Governing Council is at loggerheads with MDCAN over eligibility to the office of the Vice Chancellor.

In his remarks at the meeting, the Pro Chancellor and Chairman Ambassador Mbadiwe assured the Minister that the Council will do everything within its power to maintain peace in the University. He assured that all grievances will be amicably resolved in the interest of the great University named after the great ‘ZIK of Africa’ Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe.

The meeting which was at the instance of the Minister ended cordially according to a statement by the Special Adviser to the acting Vice Chancellor on Information and Public Relations, Dr. Emmanuel Ojukwu who said that there were several other discussions that centred on the welfare of staff of the university and other developmental challenges currently facing Higher Education in Nigeria#
