On the International Day of the Girl Child, the Initiative for Research, Innovation and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) and The Electoral Hub underscore their dedication to addressing the unique challenges faced by girls in Nigeria. Under the theme “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” the observance emphasizes girls as pivotal change-makers in society.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly, the International Day of the Girl Child highlights issues like systemic gender discrimination, violence, and barriers to education and healthcare. In Nigeria, alarming statistics reveal that 38% of girls are out of school, with child marriage significantly impacting their futures.
Princess Hamman-Obels, Director of IRIAD-The Electoral Hub, stresses that these educational gaps hinder personal development and have profound implications for national growth. “Gender-based violence remains a critical barrier,” she notes, emphasizing the need for advocacy to promote girls’ rights and access to essential services.
The organizations focus on data-driven strategies to tackle these challenges, offering educational programs, leadership training, and community engagement to empower girls. Hamman-Obels affirms their commitment to ensuring that every girl can pursue her dreams without limitations.
As they celebrate this vital day, IRIAD and The Electoral Hub call for collective action to foster an environment where gender equity is a reality, urging Nigerians to invest in a future where girls are active participants in shaping their communities.
