Tributes have continued to pour in, with prominent Nigerians eulogising the late elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away at the age of 96 in Lagos on Friday.

Many have continued to hail his lifelong commitment to democracy, unity, and good governance.

Senator Orji Kalu (Abia State) has described Adebanjo as a “patriotic leader, strong advocate for democracy, and a symbol of national unity.”

Kalu, who chairs the Senate Committee on Privatisation and the South East Development Commission, noted that the late statesman’s contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development would remain indelible.

“The passing of elder statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, is a great loss to Nigeria. He was a fearless leader who stood for truth and fairness at all times.

“His wisdom, courage, and commitment to national unity will be greatly missed,” Kalu said in a NAN report on Friday.

He extended his condolences to the Adebanjo family, Afenifere, and all Nigerians touched by the late leader’s legacy, praying for strength for the bereaved and for the peaceful repose of Adebanjo’s soul.

Similarly, former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, described Adebanjo as a “champion of equity and inclusiveness” and a “foremost nationalist.”

Writing in the condolence register at Adebanjo’s residence in Lekki, Lagos, Anyaoku paid tribute to his unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential.

“Adieu to a giant of Nigeria’s movement to independence, to a foremost nationalist and an unshakeable believer in the potential of Nigeria for stability, unity, and development through a constitution that ensures equity and inclusiveness for all the different groups in the country,” he wrote.

Afenifere leader, Dr. Ebun Sonaya, emphasised Adebanjo’s devotion to Nigeria’s unity and progress, recalling his influence as a successor to Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“The death of Adebanjo has left a big void. He was a big motivator, a strong-willed person who loved this country. We will miss his loyalty—he was the most loyal person I know,” Sonaya stated.

He added that Adebanjo’s passing could serve as a moment of reflection for South West politicians and possibly “heal all wounds and bring everybody together.”

Since the announcement of his passing, Afenifere leaders, family members, and associates have continued to visit his Lagos residence to pay their respects.
